Ancient Hearts and Spades [Game Download] Review

With new WinXP64 pro Win7 pro 64 bit systems, I was anxious to get my game previously purchased from Playfirst setup on my new machines to see how it would run. GRRRRRRRRRR Playfirst net authorizing procedure failed because they don't carry it anymore.br /br /So I bought the download from Amazon. Amazon's download method failed completely for me. So I emailed and got a refund. Imo, the download problem is related to Windows 64 bit systems which I'm sure Amazon will get fixed.br /br /In the meantime, after several angry emails to Playfirst, they fixed the problem after my Amazon hiccup.br /br /This game ROCKS on both WinXP Win7 64 bit operating systems.br /SO if you have no issues with Amazon's download method, I definitely recommend this game.br /

A fairly objective review.. - Sheeple -
NOTE: This review is directed ONLY towards the spades portion of this game.br /br /I'd certainly say this game is very good for the price. The cons are as follows.. The music in this game is EXTREMELY monotonous. I played the free trial only once, and i ended up turning off the music immediately. Furthermore, the sound was very scratchy, compounding the issue. Another con is that you cannot change the spade gametype. If you don't like nils, or you want to change what point situation to allow nils in, or you want to allow doublnilling, this isn't your game. Each bidding round allows you to bid 1 - 13 and nil. That's all.br /br /Being a fairly veteran spades player, i turned the game to hard. All said and done, i beat the computer team 500something to negative something. The AI is average, at best. Granted, i only played one game. My partner didn't overbid at any point, which is nice, but a bit unrealistic. Don't get me wrong though; if the computer was prone to overbidding, i'd probably have written a con about that too. However, it's worth mentioning this because a real player's ability to adapt to their partner's bidding habits is a true benchmark of spades playing. Another issue is the gameplay smoothness.. I have a Core 2 Duo, 1.66GHz, 3GB RAM laptop with a Geforece 8600m GT 512mb graphics card. This is by no means top of the line, but it should have been able to handle this non-3d game. Unfortunately, there was considerable studdering on this setup. Even when i changed the game to "windowed" mode (which should be default, but isn't), the game studdered noticeably. br /br /For pros, the game was fairly challenging. I considered buying it for the price, but realized that the lack of configuration was the undoing. If there were different music tracks, that would have helped. If the sound didn't repeat so frequently, that may have helped. If i could have chosen different game options, that would have helped. The only real "options" were AI settings, a tournament mode, and a speed mode. Those are pluses, but should have been configurable in and of themselves.br /br /For learning the game, this is a good tool. For advancing your game, this will not help you in any major way. It's too static.
